Assessment Rules & Categories

Updated 27th August 2007

The Shoalhaven Photographic Club have revised its assessment rules and categories, effective from Wednesday 14th November 2007.

ASSESSMENT RULES

Assessment meeting nights are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. Photos are appraised by a guest judge and points are awarded at the judge’s discretion. Details of the entries should be completed on the list provided and photos handed to the Assessment Coordinator before 7.30pm.

ENTRY CATEGORIES AND REQUIREMENTS
A maximum of two photos may be entered into any of six categories. The categories are:

SET SUBJECT - Colour, Monochrome and “Creative”;

OPEN SUBJECT - Colour, Monochrome and “Creative”.

The "Creative" category has been introduced to allow photographs with significant image manipulation and artistic effects to compete separate from more traditional Colour and Monochrome categories.

Images entered in Colour or Monochrome categories may be digitally enhanced to improve the image using techniques such as Dodging, Burning, Contrast, Levels and Stitching. Cloning may be used to remove distracting elements.
Resulting images must remain true to the original scene.

Monochrome refers to images comprising of a single hue. Examples are B&W and Sepia.

A maximum of eight prints in total can be entered on each assessment night. Photos must be mounted. There are no size restrictions, however prints are typically sized A4 to A3, plus mount.

Prints must be original images photographed by the entrant. They should be photographed within the last five years before assessment. All prints must have a title written on the back of the submission and should also indicate the correct orientation (eg. “TOP”). Names should not be printed on the front of the photo.

For new members and visitors within their first competition year an optional Mini-Print section exists for the same six categories as above. Entries in this section should either be 6” x 4” or 5” x 7” and need not be mounted. If a new member or visitor presents a mini-print, they may not enter another image in the same category on the night.

POINT SCORES AND AWARDS

Photos on assessment nights receive the following points:

Set Subject:                          Open Subject:

Merit Award - 4 points            Merit Award - 3 points

Credit Award - 3 points          Credit Award - 2 points

1 point is awarded for every set subject entry not earning a Merit or Credit.

These points are awarded in the Mini-Print section as well.

Points are accumulated for each member’s yearly total starting from the AGM in October. Annual prizes are awarded for members achieving highest point scores in Colour, Monochrome and “Creative” sections.

All prints receiving a Merit or Credit will have an acknowledgement label supplied. The title of an awarded print should be confirmed with the Assessment Coordinator after judging.

Only prints with this acknowledgement label will be accepted for judging at the Annual Print Awards and Presentation Night held in October. A maximum of 4 prints for each Colour, Monochrome and “Creative” categories may be entered, and should be submitted to the Assessment Coordinator before or at the club meeting on the 4th Wednesday in October.

FEES

Full membership $25 per year, Concession/Student $15 per year.

An additional $3 is payable at each meeting. This includes visitors.
